Professional cable diagnostics

Fault locator for electric underfloor heating

Equipment for locating faults in heating cables. Helps quickly locate a fault before repair so the floor covering can be opened at the right spot.

WireTrace device

Equipment for your diagnostic task

One device for diagnosing twin-conductor heating cables and mats.

WireTrace device

Diagnosis and fault location in electric heating cables before repair.

Works with all twin-conductor heating cables and mats, except self-regulating cable.

Capabilities

  • High-voltage formation of a conductive path
  • Low-voltage load mode
  • Modes can be used separately or simultaneously
  • On-the-fly circuit resistance measurement
  • Easy control via the mobile app
  • A practical enclosure for use and transport
  • Handles all types of open-circuit faults
Method

What matters when locating a fault

The device provides additional data to support the specialist’s decision. The outcome depends on the fault, the system and the measurement conditions.

Diagnose first — then open the floorHelps identify the cause of the fault

A cold floor does not necessarily mean the heating cable is damaged. Initial diagnostics should check the thermostat, temperature sensor and electrical connections. If the problem is in the heating circuit, the next step is to locate the damaged area.

The method depends on the type of faultOpen circuits, short circuits and insulation damage require different approaches.

WireTrace equipment uses effective operating modes to locate faults as quickly as possible.

Less unnecessary removal of flooringFault location helps narrow down the search area before repair.

Repairing a concealed cable usually requires access to the damaged section. Locating the fault first helps determine where to open the floor.

FAQ

Questions about underfloor heating diagnostics

Quick guidance before choosing equipment and visiting a site.

Where should diagnostics begin?

Start by asking the customer in detail about the symptoms. The cause may lie in the power supply, thermostat, temperature sensor, connections or heating cable. Drawing on years of repair experience, we have prepared a checklist for working with customers. A detailed checklist and procedures for different situations are supplied with the device.

How can a break in an underfloor heating cable be located beneath tiles?

Before connecting the high-voltage fault-conditioning unit, check that the supply voltage is present and that the thermostat and sensor work correctly. Then measure the heating circuit resistance to identify the type of fault. Only after these checks should specialist equipment be connected.

Can a standard multimeter locate a cable break?

A multimeter can help detect an open circuit or an abnormal resistance reading, but it does not show where the fault is beneath the flooring. Locating it requires a suitable fault-finding method.

Will a thermal camera find every fault?

When used with specialist equipment, a thermal camera is an integral part of locating a fault, but it generally cannot locate the fault on its own. A complete break with no heating may produce no distinctive thermal trace.

Why does the RCD trip when underfloor heating is switched on?

One possible cause is current leakage, including leakage caused by damaged insulation. Tripping alone does not identify the fault location: the system needs to be checked. Repeated switching on or disabling protection is no substitute for diagnostics.

Can a short circuit or insulation fault be located?

WireTrace is designed to address these faults too. In load-testing mode, it allows the heating cable section up to the short circuit to be heated. The technician can then readily locate the short circuit using a thermal camera.

Does the device repair the cable itself?

No. Diagnostic equipment helps locate the damaged area. A specialist carries out the repair separately, using connector sleeves to restore the conductors, and restoring the insulation and flooring. We can help you obtain the full range of consumables and tools for fast, convenient work.

Is the equipment suitable for every electric underfloor heating system?

No. It works with all twin-conductor heating cables and mats, except self-regulating cable. This description does not apply to water-based or heating-film systems.

What affects fault-location accuracy?

It depends on the fault type, diagnostic method, cable construction, installation depth, flooring, reinforcement and interference. A numerical accuracy figure can only be stated together with verified test conditions for the specific device.

Can the equipment be used without specialist training?

We have prepared a detailed operating manual for professionals choosing the equipment. All our customers can also consult our specialists free of charge and without limits about equipment operation and fault-location methods and techniques.

How does the device connect to a smartphone?

Control the device from your smartphone using the Android app. The device connects via Bluetooth.
